Essay: Our children will live in a worse environment than we do.

I think there is no doubt about this statement. Because of our pollution the greenhouse effect is increasing the climate changes and especially the global warming. This causes the glaciers to melt and so the sea-level is rising. We pollute our soil, our groundwater and we deforest an incredible amount.

Although the situation is so alarming, globally we are not changing our habits. The Kyoto protocol was a nice piece of paper but not much more. The three biggest pollutors which are China, USA and India do not want to become greener due their thought it would be detrimental to their economies.

Since the great polluters do not want to change and discourage the smaller countries to, these problems will increase in the future. There will be less arable land because of desertification as can be seen in China for example and therefore less food while the number of people around the world is increasing. Owing to the rise in sea levels there will be less arable land on which to live.

All these issues will surely cause violent wars in addition to natural disasters. It is late but we could try to reduce our ecological impact to salvage what we can.

Happy New Year to Oise's Students and Staff!!!

I've not made my Resolutions for 2013 yet, but this is a good opportunity!

However, my year will really begin when I go back home... So, some things I'm continuing to do in Bristol.

I'm certain that some things require more discipline and change in my behaviour.

My resolutions for 2013:

1. Definitely, became more punctual;

2. Study English every day and go back to classes with a particular teacher;

3. Read one book per month, alternate the language: Portuguese and English;

4. Manage my accounts every month;

5. Do exercise with more discipline and regularity;

6. Don't look at Facebook with frequency

7. Watch fewer soap operas;

8. Continue to eat healthier food;

9. Keep in touch with my friends;

10. Make two trips to another countries, at least.

At the end of 2013 I hope to come back to write here again and say that I made all resolutions! This is my promise :)

Jason's Letter. (Task: giving instructions)

Dear Xuan

How are you, man? As you know, I'm going to go on holiday; we have already talked about that. So here are my instructions for you.

My leaving date is 28 October, so would you mind staying at my flat from 29 October until 3 November?

First of all, when you come to my flat, I'd like you to stay in the guest room, because my bedroom is really dirty and there are some documents on my shelves, you don't need to worry about cleaning my room. If you are hungry, you can cook for yourself. The plates are all in the cupboard in the kitchen and all the things like pans, forks and knives are easy to find. Be careful of the oven, it doesn't work. So please don't use it.

Also you can take your clothes to my house. If you want to wash them, you can use the washing machine. It's really hard to use but don't worry about that, I'll demonstrate it for you. If you want to borrow some electronic things (e.g. camera, computer or something like that), I will tell you where they are.

It is important to open the window, because in my flat, the air isn't fresh. I want to remind you that my flat is on the second floor, so could you please close the window when you go to bed. In addition, I don't have air conditioning so would you mind using the heater if you feel cold.

Finally, I must warn you to BE CAREFUL about the Room 101 on the first floor, because in this room there are some unusual animals such as snakes, fierce dogs and maybe ghosts.

Bristol's Top 10 Fascinating Facts

1– Magna Carta by Bristol's King John:

Originally issued in Latin in the year 1215.

This charter required Bristol's King John to proclaim certain liberties and accept that his will was not arbitrary.

2– Edward Teach:

Better known as Blackbeard, was a notorious English pirate.

Little is known about his early life. It is commonly believed that he was born in about 1680.

His name is from his thick black beard and scary appearance.

 

3– The Hippodrome:

Celebrates its 100^th anniversary this December.

Its magnificent gold and red interior.

 

4– Bristol Blue Glass:

During the late 18^th century Richard Champion merchant making porcelain was working with a chemist. Together they began a search to give the blue glaze decoration on the white porcelain.

Lazurus and Jacobs were the most famous makers in 1780.

5– Arnolfini:

It's an art centre and gallery. It has a program of exhibitions, live art, music, poetry …

It's named after the Arnolfini Portrait - one of the earliest paintings to assert the presence of the artist in the picture.

 

6– Painted Gorillas:

Launched in the city in 2011 to mark Bristol Zoo's 175^th birthday.

The latest pair, Jackgorilla and Juborilla are currently standing guard by Clifton Bridge (see #9 below).

7– Pieminister:

Is one of Bristol's great culinary success. The business was launched in 2003 and built up its customer loyalty.

It's the only leading pie brand in the UK to only use free range British chicken.

There's a large range of pies, more than ten.

You can eat pies at the shop, markets and PM's pubs.

8– Sailing Ship:

The Matthew was a caravel sailed by John Cabot in 1497 from Bristol to North America. It was small ship carrying about 18 people.

To celebrate the 500^th anniversary of Cabot's voyage, a replica of the Matthew was built.

9– Suspension Bridge:

Is the symbol of Bristol and the original idea originated in 1753.

Two men were killed during the bridge's construction and since opening it gained a reputation as suicide bridge. In the original design were included two giant sphinx.

10– Wills Tobacco:

Is the oldest Tobacco Factory but now is a model of urban regeneration.

It's now a multi-use building: restaurant, animation, performing art school, loft-style apartments, bar, etc.

Different countries-Different habits

  In Bristol and above all in the OISE school we can meet students from all of the world : Russia, Spain, Taiwan and France of course ... to study English and consequently their different cultures mix together.
  When in England people born with an umbrella and boots, in Russia, they born with a bottle of vodka, in France with a french stick and in Tawain with a computer instead of brain.  
   Everybody knows that Russia is the biggest country in the world. Many different nationalities live in Russia and they all have very varied livestyles. They are friendly, polite. When in the north of Russia the weather can be cold, in the south, it can be very hot and in England, unfortunetely, it is rainning like cats and dogs.
   In Syria, people love a Libaneses singer name Fairouz. With many singers, she sang in musicals as Mais el Reem, Petra or the beautiful Baya el-Khawatim directed by Youssef Chahine. Fairouz is my childhood, but nowadays, with the society of consuming, music in Syria has become a commercial thing.
   In France, inhabitants are well known for their bad mood, for their strange taste for frog's legs and for their sence of humor.
   In Taiwan, Taiwanese are very kind and passion. Taiwan also have many special local product, like fruit. But the weak point of Taiwan is the weather.

• Nightlife

Pubs, restaurants, bars of Bristol are very differents to others countries, because in Bristol this sites have a lot of  bouncers and security.
Nigtlife is very expensive and there are a lot of people on the weekend.

• Graffiti

There are many examples of graffiti in the City. Those examples of graffiti are works of art in the City.
Those pictures make Bristol different.

• People

The population is very cosmopolitan. Walking in the street  you can hear: " Buenos dias, bonjour, bona sera, dobroe utro, nii hao", etc.
There are many students who come to study English, that's why there are many young people.

It's very interesting to listen to prononciation and accent English language from other nationatilities.
Spanish studients are very noisy and funny :)
Russian studients are very happy and very serious :)
French studients are formal, quite and very open
Chinese studients are very focused people
Arabic studients are very positive
